What happens when a young woman, who has known only acclaim and security, abruptly loses everything?
Sedonia Forbes sits in her sports car, parked behind a rundown poolroom. Three months ago, she was the top amateur woman golfer in the nation. Newspapers heralded her as an up-and-coming female Tiger Woods. Now she's a nobody, who can never play golf again.
She's come to this poolroom looking for a hustler named Emilio. Tears of frustration well, but she blinks them back. There's been enough of that! She climbs out of her car, and leaving her country-club life behind, she enters the green-felt poolroom jungle.
Populated by authentic characters and told from an insider's view of professional pool, Stroke is the story of a young woman's quest for redemption and self-renewal.

I only made it to the 28% mark on my Kindle when I suddenly realized that I was 1/4 done with the book and not a darn thing had happened yet. It's a decent evocation of a world (not great, but really not bad), but there's something missing--something called "dramatic tension." Nothing's going on. She's learning to play pool, and she's playing pool. Okay. I could have gotten that in about ten pages. At this point the chances that I'm wasting my time are going way, way up--I don't trust the author to set up any sort of dramatic tension later on in the book, given that that task is almost always accomplished early on in a novel. I mean, most authors take it as an urgent task. They'll set up the basic tension in the first thirty pages, or the first two pages, or the first paragraph, or the first SENTENCE. If an author can't manage to make you curious about "what happens next?" in the whole first quarter of the book....
Oddly enough, this is a flaw of most pool books. No arc to the story. Just pool and then more pool.
So she's learning to play pool, and she's playing pool. Doesn't float my boat because...well, I'd rather go play pool.
Three stars instead of two because maybe something happens in the last 3/4th of the book. I'll never know.

Stroke eBook Carlos Miller Reviews
The beginning draws you in but then it becomes repetitive. Also it was a bit wordy and over descriptive
For a guy, Carl Miller does a good job of writing from the female point of view. Readers who are complete idiots concerning pool will enjoy learning to appreciate it right along with heroine Sedonia, who is also naive about many aspects of the game at the start of the story. A great read.
Love pool & loved this story, enjoyed every minute of this read, every pool player will like this book it reads like a true story
This is a great read even if you don't like to read alot. If you're a pool player, you'll love it -if you're not, it might make you want to learn how to play.
Miller conjures up great visual imagery with his word crafting skill so you feel like you're watching STROKE "the movie". And Sedonia, at a fragile point in her life, is paradoxically soft and vulnerable while tough and driven. STROKE gives us a great look at today's billiard's competition - both as an up and coming popular sport among professional athletes as well as just plain folks.
A fast read into the interesting world of women's profesional pool playing, a contrast to the world of "The Hustler". Written by someone who knows and appreciates the game.
not much of a real "shooting " pool story, more of a story about a girl that shoots pool.....but still a easy read that is able to
keep your interest .....
I could not even finish this poorly written unrealistic fairy tale. As a competitive pool player for over 10 years, I have witnessed and even played some of the best players in the world. Every player, even World Champions, miss now and then and you can not run out EVERY table. Yet, in this silly tale, the lead character does seem to run out every table and I think missed maybe one ball in the first 250 pages! All this is usually playing 8 Ball, which is far more difficult to run out then 9 Ball.
I new it was headed toward her winning a WPBA tournament and I just could not stomach any more. I personally know the hard work, sweat and tears that goes into just making it into a pro event. Even the most talented players must win a qualifier and this in itself is no easy feat. The author completely misses the nuisances and strategies involved in a game of pool, it takes a lot more than just pocketing balls to win a game.
Had the author shown a true progression in the lead characters skills, I might have bought a cinderella ending but as it was written it just made me cringe and ultimately abandon.
